AS Prelim task

AS Main Task " ADDICTED" Opening Sequence

Wednesday 17 March 2010

Because we mainly shot our film in POV shots, we never needed no cast. We decided to film our sequence in POV shots, because we never wanted to give away the indentity of our character, we wanted to keep it secret to intice them into watching more. We had Jesse (Cameraman) to do our breathing and footsteps off screen. The benefits of having no cast were that we never had to wait for them to turn up to shoot, we all had the trust of the members in our group, and knew we would all turn up on the day of filming, however we would not have this trust on a cast. this is also the reason we did not need to audition for cast. this saved time for us and created a relaxed atmosphere without the strees of having to control and direct cast.

the props that we used were just a mobile phone which allowed us to make more use of our surroundings.
Q7
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

In my preliminary task I learnt the basics of how to use the camera, direct and how to set up sound and the camera. I use all the basic tools of media to create a short sequence allowing myself to know how to create a sequence from scratch with my own imagination. This let my creative side develop and to get a hands on experience on how it’s done by the professional and amateur film makers. In my main task I used my knowledge of the basic tools of media and developed them. This gave a pathway for my skills and creative side to increase.
I made mistakes in my preliminary task and when it came to the production of my main task I knew not to make the same mistakes that I did before.

Pre Production
In my preliminary task for my pre production we came up with an idea first then we planned how this idea would look by making a storyboard deciding what shots and angles to use. We then wrote a script for our cast to have dialogue.

In my main task for my pre production we looked at other films such as 7 pounds by Gabrielle Muccino, Water by Deepak Mehta, Geisha by Rob Marshall and Love Actually by Dr Richard Curtis. We did this to see their creativity in their narrative and storyline, also how they represented their character in their opening sequence. We then made a treatment, presented a pitch and made a mood board. We then researched the genre we wanted our film to be and researched our genre target audience. After learning about character representation and our genre and its target audience we were able to make a storyboard that would have the codes and conventions of our genre and that would entice our watching audience.

The difference between my prelim and main task is that i developed knowledge on how to build a film in a constructive way that would allow us to have a target audience. In my prelim task w did not have a clear genre however in our main task having a genre in which to follow certain rules made it easier to create our own thriller film because we had ideas of what the final product should look like due to our previous knowledge of thriller movies that we’ve watched. Also looking at the creativity of other films such as 7 pounds and their character representation help us to come up with creative ideas of our own.

Production

In the process of producing our prelim task there were a lot of problems that occurred. For example we did not book the setting that we needed to so we had to change setting which affected our storyboard and plans of the shots we decided to use. Also our continuity sheet was not filled in properly and we did not use our cues professionally and wisely. However in my main task all the mistakes that I made in my prelim I made sure that I didn’t in my main by always looking back at what I done in my prelim and developing it in my main to make it more mature and so that a change and progression could be shown.

The difference between my prelim production and my main task production is that I learnt what to do and how to produce in my prelim and knew how to make it much better in my main task.

Post Production

When editing my prelim task I was unfamiliar with the editing program we were using and weren’t keen on using it. I learnt how to digitize and use the program the more and more I edited the more and more i learnt about it.

Also because our continuity sheet was not filled out properly not stating the good shots and the bad shots it made it harder for my group to digitize our shot as we had to watch the whole tape and pick the best takes for each shot. In my main task I felt confident using adobe premium pro as I familiarized myself with the program which made it easier for me to use. I learnt how to add effects wisely to shots and not because they look good.

The difference in my post production from my prelim task to my main task is that I didn’t know how to use adobe premium pro however i learnt how to use it and expanded my skills on how to use it by experimenting in my main task different effects like the speed of shots, adding titles and credits and editing sound.
Q6
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Camera

In the process of constructing the product I learnt how to use and set up the canon XH-A1 camera, because I had never used this camera before throughout the construction of the product I developed my skills on how to use it properly. Also due to the research I did on the digital video cannon XH-A1 camera I learnt the pros and cons of it which help my group when we were shooting our sequence. For example when the lock button at the side of the camera is on the view finder will not show any imagery until the lock is taken off, my knowledge of this saved my group from having any problems on the filming day. I found out that there were two recording buttons on the camera one at the top of the camera and one hidden which the rewind, fast forward, play and stop buttons at the top of the camera.

Another skill that my group developed was our techniques on how to use the camera hand held to create the effects we wanted. For example if the camera is tilted from side to side slowly the view finder starts to blur the image, this made it more effective for us when adding the blur effect on adobe premium pro. We also knew that the camera had its own microphone so at times when the external microphone modular windshield system was not needed we used the camera’s microphone, however when we wanted to use the windshield which was connected to the boom pole we had to use the XLR cable to connect it to the camera.

Filming Techniques

The filming techniques that I learnt were the rule of thirds, how to frame our shots in order to show the audience what we want them to see first in the shot. As evidence in the third shot we see our character drop his phone, however before he drops it his phone is in the centre of the frame which is the first thing we see. This enabling us to see that he is calling Michelle. When he drops his phone on the floor it drops to the top right hand corner of the frame which allows the focus to be taken of the phone and onto the character legs and the carpet showing he is inside and sitting down.

Also we learnt how to use our cues correctly like action and making the person doing the actions start a second or two after so they may be a gap for us when editing making it easy to edit.

Lastly on the shooting day I was the director for my group and I learnt how to direct the camera man and sound engineer so that shots may come out the way I wanted them to. I made sure that we kept good continuity and had safety shots. I did this by filling out the continuity sheets relating back to the storyboard and coming up with new ideas on scene.
Editing

When editing we used a program called adobe premium pro to edit our product. To do this we needed:

• LaCie drive
We needed a LaCie drive in order to save our sequence on to it.
• Canon XH-A1
We needed the camera to be able to digitize all our shots to adobe premium pro’s
• Tape
We needed the tape in the camera because all of our recorded shot were placed on it.
• Fire wire
We needed the fire wire to connect the camera to the computer and adobe premium pro.

Editing Techniques

The editing techniques that I learnt from using Adobe premium Pro were firstly how to digitize all of our shots. This step of the process is only picking every good take or take we want from every shot, which saved us time and hassle when editing. I learnt that digitizing is only easy when a continuity sheet and cues like the clapper board are used wisely.

Shots can then be dragged into the source finder which shows the shot before you put it on the timeline. For example when my group was editing our sequence we had many good takes for each shot. So we used the source finder to pick our best take for the shots and where we wanted them to start and end before editing them on the timeline.
The next step was to assemble all our shots on to the timeline and dragging them into video one and audio one.
This was easy because they had all been named e.g. shot 1-10. For some of the shots we only needed the sound and not the image which became useful for our first shot of the off screen breathing sound. We then started cutting all our shots to make them look the way we wanted them to look. For example if a shot was too long we’d cut it to make it shorter or if a shot was to short we’d drag the end of the shot to expand the duration of it.

I have mostly developed my skills on how to use and add effects effectively to shots. For example I use a dip to white effect at the end of the sequence to create a flashback effect. I also increased the speed of the last few shots and the last shot I decreased the speed to make the flash back seem more real opposed to if everything was still going the same speed as the shots before.

Lastly when importing and editing sounds to audio one, two and three I learnt how to create a sound mix. By mixing various sounds from different soundtracks to create an ambiance that I wanted and felt would match our sequence.

Also while editing I was able to fade in and out each soundtrack when I wanted them to or I lowered volume and bypass level of the soundtracks in order to hear sounds that I wanted the audience to hear. For example when editing the first shot I could hear that the other two soundtracks I was using (in memoriam and fear factor) was louder than the heart beat and breathing that I wanted the audience to hear. So I lowered the volume of the other two soundtracks and levelled the heart beat soundtrack with the diegetic breathing to make it sound as if his heart was beating and he was beating heavily. To give a clue to the audience that something has just gone wrong and our character is scared. I was able to do this effectively by holding onto the Ctrl and + button to maximize the view on the timeline.
Q5
How did you attract/address your audience?

We attracted our audience with all of our shots, sound, credits and titles. For example in the first shot the non diegetic heart beat and the diegetic breathing sounds mix to give a powerful effect on our first shot drawing the audience in and using a sound bridge to show the second shot of George sitting on a chair and holding a phone to make the narrative more believable.

the shot where the sound of our character’s running footsteps off screen and on screen makes the audience think why is he running and allows the them to then start feeling like they are running with him because it’s a point of view shot. In the long take where our character George is beginning to feel dizzy and getting slower as he runs enabled us to use a blur effect to make it seem like our character’s vision is going blurry. We chose to use a blur effect so that the audience get drawn into the fact that our character is going dizzy. We also used a blur and fade in and fade out effect on the title and credits in order to keep the tempo and the smoothness from shot to shot.
Q4
Who would be the audience for your media product?

For our film the gender of our primary target audience would be males. The reason for this is that males like the idea of watching a pretty girl being followed and they are more attracted to thriller movies because of their mysteries. Also males would be our primary target audience because of their psychographics.

For example the male sex representation is that they have ego’s and are full of pride. They are believed to have more intellectual intelligence and be better than women at most things. Men usually have the role of the head in a family and are usually the ones who go out in search of money. Therefore men like being independent and being able to decode and fix things. The hobbies of our target audience would be playing games that test their knowledge such as scrabble, chess, who wants to be a millionaire and grand theft auto’s game san andreas.

This is because all of these games have thriller aspects to them such as guessing, re-arranging the pieces to create a word and following a storyline to find an answer like in a movie. We adjusted our opening sequence for our target audience by using techniques from other thriller movies that they would have already seen such as the sixth sense which has a shot in their opening sequence where we hear a sound bridge of a gun shot and dialogue from on screen to off screen, back to on screen again.

We have used this in the first shot of our sequence where we have a sound bridge of heavy breathing off screen to heavy breathing on screen. Also the shot of our characters running footsteps off screen and a sound bridge to on screen running footsteps. Our primary target audience would have an age certificate of 15 and would be aged 15-25. Due to my research 75% of thriller fans are young adults aged 15-25 because of their demographic status. The T.V programmes they would have recently watched would be misfits, being Erica and heroes because they are thriller fans they would watch programmes that give them thrills.

Our secondary target audience would be aimed at the girlfriends of the males. They are most likely to watch thrillers on a date, Valentines Day or holidays. We adjusted our sequence for our secondary audience by combining mystery with thriller. Not letting them see our main character leaving them wanting to watch to see what he looks like and why he is in the state that he is. In addition our secondary target audience could also be fans of the actors/actresses in the film. This is because they will be drawn into watching their favourite actor or actress in a movie.
Q3
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

YouTube is a video sharing website on which users can upload and share videos. In November 2006 You Tube, LLC was bought by Google Inc. For 1.65 billion dollars and now is operating as a subsidiary of Google.
They use adobe flash video technology to show a variety of video contents such as movie clips, TV clips and music videos, as well as amateur video blogging and short original videos. In July 2006 more than 65; 000 new videos were being uploaded every day. In March 2008, YouTube’s bandwidth costs were estimated at approximately US$1 million a day and mare than six billion videos were viewed in January 2009.
It is also estimated that 20 hours of new videos are uploaded to the site every minute. YouTube would suit me for my film because it is free and its film distribution is easy. You sign up and become a member of you tube then you are able to start uploading your videos.

You Tube would suit my film because it would help my target audience to find my film easily under the You Tube categories and uses the right psychographics of the audience. This also because people will be able to leave comments about my film and what they thought of it which would give me reviews and would lead to a bigger fan base. The fact that You Tube allows us to have our own You Tube site/ video blog means that our film will be accessible to the entire world. You Tube is known in 22 different languages and countries including France, the UK and Germany.

Vimeo is a home to communities looking for a place to share their moments and creativity with friends, family, or other users. These videos are created with care by our users and seen through the world. As a result they have over 20 million monthly visitors, with membership growing rapidly every day. They also offer clients high impact advertising integrations.

Vimeo would also be an ideal place to distribute my film because it is also a video network sharing site. Also due to the fact that they have several of film festivals and film contests for amateur films. This would match with the distribution of my film because i could enter film festivals and contests to rapidly get my film out and get its rep up. The more and more contest and festivals my film will enter the more and more people will know about it and start to share with their friends which is the way we could also reach out to a third audience

Q2
How does your opening sequence represent particular social groups?

The main characters in our film are George and Michelle. George is a lonely geek and obsessed with Michelle. Michelle is a popular girl who is pretty and has the good looking boyfriend. This shows the main codes and conventions of thriller movies following the characteristics of the usual characters in thriller movies about stalker.

George:
We represent George as lonely and obsessive by using dark colours for his costume. Such as black trainers and trousers, these colours have the connotations of a dark person, death, and evil, wrongness, scary and secretive which relates to our character (George). His costume also represents his lonely and unpopular side as black is not a popular colour. For example it’s the sort of colour that outcasts would wear like Goths to show that they are different from the rest left out and abandoned.

He is wearing trousers which suggest that his sexuality is male. Also the fact that he is of black ethnicity allows us to easily use a representation of badness due to the stereotypical role of his race..

George takes up most of the frame in shots. Which suggest that our character is alone. Also the audience cannot see all of the setting when he’s inside the house which shows off his secretive and hidden behaviour. When George is outside he’s body language changes as if he becomes scared and afraid. Suggesting that he does not like the outside nor being in contact with people. In the shot where the phone drops it drops to the top right hand corner of the frame next to his right leg this giving the impression that our character always thinks he’s right and never wrong.

The lighting is not low key lighting that would usually be used for antagonists; however we had high key lighting to contradict the fact that he is wearing a black costume. As if to suggest that he is trying to justify he’s action and likes to think of himself as a protagonist.

The same characteristics can be found in James Foley’s perfect stranger character miles as he is also always wearing dark colours. James Foley used a small room for the setting of miles’s obsessed room with props such as stickers, pictures and dolls. The loneliness is shown because when he is on the camera because he takes up most of the frame. Miles’s character is mostly put under low key lighting to show that his is an antagonist as in the picture where half of his face is shun by the light and left side darkened with a shadow, to suggest that he has two different faces to him like a split personality. These are the same characteristics we tried to incorporate in our main character George.

Michelle:
We represent Michelle as the pretty and popular girl that George is obsessed with. This is represented well as we do not show Michelle in the whole of the opening sequence which challenges and manipulates the audience’s thoughts of what she looks like and why we have not shown her in the sequence.

Michelle has the same characteristics as Rowena’s character in perfect stranger being the popular pretty girl that miles’ wants to be with. In the picture we see that her hair is tied back and her left eye brow is raised slightly to suggest that she is confident as she also has a smirk on her face and her cheek bones are high as if to suggest that she is smiling.
The earring that she is wearing with her neck strapped dress suggests that she is glamorous. Also the fact that she is wearing minimal jewellery shows of her physical appearance which compliments her body language as her back is upright as if to suggest she is powerful with her arms slanted to the left and her left shoulder raised higher that her right to suggest that she uses her sex appeal to get what she wants. In this way we have portrayed Michelle in our storyline as she would have the same behaviour and hair and make- up as Rowena.
